What Are Zen Phrases? — Words of “Awakening” Condensed into a Few Syllables

Short phrases polished through Zen practice
Zen phrases (zengo) are words that Zen monks condensed from their experiences of enlightenment and everyday insights. They are often expressed in four-character idioms or simple phrases of about five to seven characters, carrying an immediate impact that conveys meaning at a glance.

Profound philosophy applied to daily life
Examples such as “Nichinichi kore kōnichi” (Every day is a good day), “Jikon” (This very moment), and “Mujō”(Impermanence) show how Zen phrases emphasize a mindfulness-like teaching of treasuring the present moment. Their simplicity makes them resonate strongly with busy modern people.

From calligraphy and hanging scrolls to pop culture
Originally appreciated in Zen temples as calligraphic works and hanging scrolls, Zen phrases have in recent years spread into graphic design and fashion. Today, they are gaining popularity both in Japan and abroad under the name “ZEN Phrases.”
